Who is John GAL - AWAY?

Identifying John GALAWAY and creating his place in the Atoka Cemetery Family Tree

To date there are no documents to confirm John GALAWAY buried in Atoka Cemetery is related to anyone else buried in Atoka Cemetery. However, extrapolating beyond the following eight (8) data points lends a confident identity of this John GALAWAY as the teacher at Blue Gap School and the first husband of Anna Lucy JOHNSON GALLOWAY PARKER.

1. GALAWAY is often spelled -- or misspelled -- GALLAWAY or GALLOWAY, even within the same family tree.

2. According to his Atoka Cemetery grave stone John GALAWAY was born 11 April 1853.

3. The book "A History of Coleman County and Its People" indicates "Blue Gap School was mentioned in the Commissioner’s Court Minutes of 1877, and John Galloway was the teacher. This school was located in northeast Runnels County, which was under Coleman Counties jurisdiction at that time." In his Democrat-Voice article, Jack SHIELDS wrote, "Coleman County Commissioners Court minutes of 1877 list a school called Jim Ned on Jim Ned Creek. In 1877 court minutes mention a Blue Gap School and a John Galloway was the teacher. John Galloway is buried at Atoka."
- "Atoka… Early Settlement: Atoka Schools" by Jack Shields; Chronicle and Democrat-Voice; Coleman, Coleman Co, TEXAS 20 October, 1987
- "Blue Gap School" by Ralph Terry from A History of Coleman County and Its People, 1985 edited by Judia and Ralph Terry, and Vena Bob Gates

4. According to the Ralph TERRY transcript of the Coleman County, Texas Marriage Records
Books I - IV, July 17, 1873 - October 10, 1907
Groom: Galaway John
Bride: Johnson Miss A. S.
Marriage Date: 9/4/1879
Officiant: Childress H. M. Methodist Minister
Place: Coleman County, Texas
… John GALAWAY married Anna Lucy JOHNSON on 04 September, 1879. It is possible -- and in context probable -- the cursive "S" was actually a cursive "L."

As an interesting aside, GALAWAY and JOHNSON were married by Reverend Hugh Martin CHILDRESS, Sr. , also buried in Atoka Cemetery, just four graves from John GALAWAY.

5. Goldie L. GALAWAY WHITE was born 6 Apr 1882. Her California Death Certificate indicates the following:
Birth Date: 6 Apr 1882
Mother's Maiden Name: Johnson
Father's Surname: Galaway

6. According to his Atoka Cemetery grave stone, John GALAWAY died on 30 April 1884, at 31 years old. The Coleman County, Texas Cemetery Directory records his grave among the following:
CHILDRESS, Hugh M., Sr - Dec 13, 1800 - July 29, 1886 - "Capt Texas Cav Mexican War"
CHILDRESS, Susannah - Dec 29, 1809 - Feb 18, 1882 - "wife of Hugh Martin Childress"
CHILDRESS, Elisha - Oct 1, 1837 - Jan 24, 1884 - (MASONIC) - "Pvt Co I Mc Cord's Regt CSA"
CHILDRESS, Mary M. (Murrill) - June 7, 1837 - June 24, 1912
[space]
GALAWAY, John - Apr 11, 1853 - Apr 30, 1884
[space]
P., H. O. - (footstone)
unknown grave - (rock)
PARKER, Dot - Aug 19, 1867 - May 25, 1904

John GALAWAY is buried near P, H. O. (footstone only), who is surely Harry O. PARKER, son of Anna Lucy JOHNSON GALLOWAY PARKER and Deloss A "Dot" PARKER, who is buried next to his son.

7. Again, according to the Ralph TERRY transcript of the Coleman County, Texas Marriage Records
Books I - IV, July 17, 1873 - October 10, 1907
Groom: Parker D. A.
Bride: Galloway Mrs. Annie
Officiant: Roddan D. F. Minister
Deloss A. "Dot" PARKER married Anna Lucy JOHNSON GALLOWAY (GALAWAY) on 19 October 1890.

8. In the 1900 US Federal Census for "Coleman Town, Coleman, Texas," Deloss "Dot" PARKER was living with his wife Lucy A. PARKER, with their four children, and with his step-daughter, Goldie L. Galloway, 18 years old, born Apr 1882 in Texas, who is believed to be the daughter of John GALAWAY.

The preponderance of evidence points to John GALAWAY's place in the Atoka Cemetery Family Tree.
