Family Story
Emma O. SARTOR SMITH, The Ultimate Caregiver
Told by Mary Beth BOOTH STROUD

[editorial comment]
[email from Mary Beth BOOTH STROUD, 30 May 2011]

"My Aunt Emma was a jewel. To me she was the matriarch of the family and the ultimate caregiver. She took in several young men who needed a place to stay while finishing school. She cared for her father-in-law and Granddad Sartor in their last years. And when Uncle Tom and Uncle Johnny (Thomas Jefferson and John Young) needed care, she brought them to her home and cared for them. I understand their death certificates state they died in Lampasas and Burnet Counties. The city of Lampasas is very close to the Burnet County line and twenty miles from Oakalla, and I suspect that one might have died in the hospital in Lampasas and the other in Emma's home in Burnet County. My sisters and I remember going to the funerals of both uncles in Crockett. As I said before, Aunt Emma was a caregiver and did all of the above while raising a family, helping run a ranch, and working as a postmaster and a teacher! She and my mother (Pearl) were as close as two sisters could ever be. Emma was a major support to Mother when my father died."
