Jack J. Almack

Jack J. Almack, 80, died Friday, March 12, 2004, at an Abilene medical center.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Monday, at Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home Chapel of Memories, 542 Hickory. A graveside service will follow at 4 p.m. in Atoka Cemetery near Novice, Texas. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

He was born to Lelia Claudine (Thomas) and Otus Perry Blackwell on January 2, 1924, in Blackwell, Oklahoma. Jack was adopted by his mother's sister, Blossom Nancy Almack, the wife of Charles Rupert Almack, following his mother's death. He received a master's degree in music from Columbia University in New York, NY, and taught music for several years at the University of El Paso. He later became an insurance agent for John Hancock Insurance from which he retired.

He was a U.S. Air Force veteran and an accomplished musician. During his military service, he was a member of the U.S.O. band, The Star Dusters, performing all over the United States and South America, and continued his music career until recent years.

After his marriage to V. Ann Attaway Cunningham on July 15, 1978, the couple resided in Abilene of which they were longtime residents. They were Baptists.

He was predeceased by his parents, his adoptive parents, and four brothers.

He is survived by his wife, V. Ann Almack of Abilene; four children; two step-children; and several grandchildren.
