Mildred M. Pate (1913 - 2012)

Mildred M. Pate, 99, of Westridge Road, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 18, 2012, at the Landsun Health Service Center [Landsun Homes, Inc. 2002 Westridge Carlsbad, NM, 88220]. Funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 22, at the First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dan Boyd officiating. Interment will follow in the new section of Carlsbad Cemetery. Visitation will be 1-5 p.m. today (Sept. 21) at West Funeral Home.

Mildred Pate was born in Matador, [Motley Co] Texas on April 22, 1913. Her parents were Wilson and Ethel (Dyer) Murrill. She had one sister, Inda Rhea Reddy; three brothers: Dub Murrill and John H. Murrill, whom are deceased, and Jim Murrill of Artesia.

At an early age, Mildred and her family moved to Roosevelt County, N.M. She finished high school in Portales, N.M., in 1930. She went to college at Las Vegas Normal University and taught school for two years at Arch, N.M.

Mildred married W. Dolphus Pate on Jan. 6, 1934. They had two daughters: Sonya Pate Loose and Doris Pate Bohm, who died in 1998, and an adopted son, Kris Murrill. Dolphus died on March 11, 1965.

In 1950, the Pate family moved to Carlsbad, and Mildred worked for Eddy County Abstract Company until June 1954. She then worked for the County Clerk's Office. In 1958, she was elected to the office of County Clerk and continued with Eddy County for 25 years as County Clerk, Deputy County Clerk and County Manager, retiring in 1979.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Democratic Women's Organization and Public Employees Retirement Association Chapter 10.

Mildred is survived by her daughter, Sonya Loose and son-in-law, Russell Loose; son, Kris Murrill; brother, Jim Murrill; son-in-law, Ed Bohm; eight grandchildren: Cindy Bolen, Robin Nies, Greg Loose, Amy Smith, Pam Bohm, Penny Shuptrine, Michael Murrill, Misty Murrill and one predeceased grandchild, Tyrell Murrill; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She is also survived by 13 great-grandchildren. Most of them called her "Granny Myd" or "Granny Great."

Pallbearers will be her great-grandsons: Ryan Nies, Hayden and Brady Smith, Pate Bolen and Jake and Hogan Loose.
